This week’s column is going to be a little different. The Halloween Season is upon us. For October I am doing things with a twist. I will be making recommendations for this spooky time of year. In November things will get back to normal but for this month let’s have some fun!!
This weeks column is about mother/daughter time (and any gentlemen reading this can do something similar with the boys) and spending time with one another in some way that is fun. First and foremost, chase the boys out for the evening. This night will be girls only. Now let’s get down to business and how you and your child can enjoy some Halloween fun (and movie bad girls) together.
For those of you with younger kids. Here is an idea. Invite a couple of your daughter’s friends and their mothers over and have a mother/daughter Halloween Slumber Party. Play some games, have some snacks, pop some popcorn and settle down in the dark to watch a spooky movie with the girls. A couple of movie bad girl selections are “Hocus Pocus” or “The Witches” Once the girls have settled down for the night the moms (that’s you) can retreat to the kitchen for a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and some adult conversation. In the morning everyone can have a wonderful breakfast together.
Now this is for the mothers with kids that fall into the tween to early teen category. Have two or three of your daughter’s friends over (the moms are not optional on this one, this is mother/daughter bonding time) and have a slumber party geared for the older and more sophisticated set. Here is a different kind of Halloween treat. Have a spa/scary movie night. Set up where everyone can do manicures, facials or whatever beauty treatment sounds like fun. Order some pizza, give the girls their facial and let them sit back and enjoy a scary movie together. A couple of suggestions for this group might be “The Bad Seed” or Stephen King’s “IT” The other moms may go home when the movie is over.
Now for those of you with teenagers: Have a date night with the girls! Get a small group of mothers and daughters together and go out for a nice dinner and to a movie. With Halloween upon us the remake of “Carrie” is an excellent choice. She is back for a whole new generation to enjoy. I know there are other movies out there but this is October. Scary movies are the most fun this time of year.
If you prefer you can have that dinner and go back to one of your homes to watch a movie. A couple of fun suggestions for a true girls night watching Movie Bad Girls are “Visiting Hours” which has a trio bad girls or the original version of “Carrie” which has stood the test of time. Don’t forget the snacks. Coffee and cheesecake would be super yummy!
There are some Halloween ideas although the real point of this column is to encourage and motivate you to spend that time together bonding with your kids. Enjoy the time because it passes more quickly than you realize. Have some fun with the girls because in the blink of an eye they will be women. Strong, beautiful, independent and with families of their own one day. Maybe this can become a tradition that your daughters share with their daughters in the not so distant future. Until next time Embrace Your Inner Bad Girl because being a kick-ass mom feels so damn good!
